在国际上普遍使用的50多个酿酒葡萄品种中，国内经常接触到的不会**过15种，所以从这个角度出发，葡萄酒的入门并不是很困难。


葡萄品种的使用无非两种：一是用单一的葡萄品种酿制，另一种是用两种或者两种以上的葡萄品种混合酿制。


用单一葡萄品种酿酒，新世界非常普遍，像美国、澳大利亚、智利、阿根廷及新西兰等地，往往会在酒标上注明葡萄品种，红葡萄酒以赤霞珠、梅乐及西拉为较常见，白葡萄酒则有霞多丽、长相思和雷司令等。这类葡萄酒由于特征明显，易于辨别，能够帮助初学者快速地认识各种葡萄品种的香气、口味等特性，也是盲品练习的必经之路。这并不表示单一葡萄品种酿出来的酒品味不高，恰恰相反，那些世界**的葡萄酒，也有许多是由单一葡萄品种酿成的，比如法国酒王帕图斯（Petrus），好的年份是用**的梅乐酿制的；世界上较贵的葡萄酒罗曼尼?康蒂（Romanee Conti）也是用**的黑比诺葡萄酿制。不过，需要提醒的是，并不是所有标注单一品种的葡萄酒，都是用**该品种酿制的，各地的法律规定不一样，通常只要达到85%就可以，例如美国及澳大利亚的葡萄酒，在酒标上注明是赤霞珠，只是表明此酒中赤霞珠葡萄的含量至少在85%，其他的15%可以是同种葡萄，也可以是其他品种，厂家不需要向消费者另外说明。
